Just learned that a friend of mine was threatened with violence at a checkpoint by Russian troops in Ukraine a few days ago. Travelling from place to place, minding his own business.
The most useful thing I’ve come across in the past couple of days to understand the conflict is this excellent conversation between a number of people with knowledge of Russia and Ukraine, held by BBC4 and the London School of Economics.
It’s full of interesting insights and parallels, as well as a very useful discussion about both the historical depth of the conflict and the construction of the present in Ukraine.
When I started this post, there was a sense that I had a funny anecdote to tell about something said in this podcast, but now it’s completely slipped my mind. The misfirings of the writing process in action, people. But at least you have the link, and it’s a great one.
